Abilene Town  1946

Randolph Scott, Ann Dvorak, Edgar Buchanan, Rhonda Fleming and Lloyd Bridges star in this fast paced action western based on the book Trail Town by Ernest Haycox (who also wrote Stagecoach).

Arizona Kid (Double Feature)

first: The Arizona Kid (Warner Baxter) carries out his mission as a Robin Hood-type bandit while posing as a wealthy and carefree miner. He falls for an eastern girl, Virginia Hoyt (Carole Lombard) accompanied by presumably her brother, Dick Hoyt (Theodore von Eltz), actually her husband. The Kid's mine is raided and two of his friends are killed and he learns that Dick and Virginia are the culprits. - then - Joe Kane directs Roy Rogers, "Gabby " Hayes, Stuart Hamblin and David Allen. Unusual for a Rogers film, Kane keeps the singing to a minimum with the emphasis on action and dramatics. The plot concerns Roy and his boyhood friend Dave. Dave's reckless and pursues a career with renegade raider Hamblin. Roy sees trouble ahead and tries to set Dave straight, with no success. Then the Civil War erupts with Roy joining the Confederates and Dave and Hamblin forming their own band of raiders. Roy is ordered to stop Hamblin's Raiders. In the final scenes where Roy has to order Dave and the other raiders executed for treason, Roy shows true emotion and a solid bit of acting. Also the final shootout with Hamblin is memorable. ($19.95)

Blue Steel  1933

An early John Wayne western from Lone Star Studios.  Here Wayne is mistaken by George (Gabby) Hayes as the notorious Polka Dot Bandit ("Pokie Dot").  This was mastered from an original 16mm print, it is not the UCLA print with that appalling new music.

Boots and  Saddles 1937

Gene Autry stars and sings ("You're the Only Rose That's Left in My Heart") in this standard Republic B western.  Smiley Burnette and Judith Allen are also featured as Gene saves the old homestead.
Daniel Boone (1936)

The great John Carradine plays Simon Girty to George O'Brien's Daniel Boone.  This chapter of Boone's life concerns the famed tracker's leading settlers from North Carolina to Kentucky.  Carradine organizes five Indian tribes to attack the encampment.
Frankie and Johnny  1934-36

Completed in 1934 this was to be the first major Republic production.  Running about 100 min; starring Helen Morgan, Chester Morris, and Lilyan Tashman; music written and directed by Victor Young; and a story by Jack Kirkland with screenplay by Moss Hart. One problem: the Hayes office.  After two years, with 34 min cut and its third billed star dead, Frankie and Johnny was released.  Here we present the 1936 release.
Outlaw   1942

Here we offer the uncut 117min. United Artists release.  Howard Hughes later bought this film from himself (when he took charge of RKO) and had it re-released at 104 then 93min.  Walter Huston, Thomas Mitchell and Jane Russell's bust are always fun to see, but Jack Beutel is not.  Not a good film by any means, but a fun cult classic.
Santa Fe Trail  1940

An underrated Warner Brothers all star film that traces the events leading to the outbreak of the civil war.  Raymond Massey, often associated with his portrayal of Lincoln, here plays John Brown;  Errol Flynn later to play Custer, here is seen as Jeb Stuart opposite Ronald Reagan's Custer.  Michael Curtiz's direction, Max Steiner's music and the production values brought by Hal B. Wallis and Jack L. Warner make this a near masterpiece.  The film also starred Olivia de Havilland with a supporting cast that included Alan Hale, Van Heflin, Henry O'Neill, Bill Lundigan, John Litel, Gene Reynolds, Alan Baxter, Ward Bond, Charles Middleton, William Hopper and Creighton Hale.
Outlaw's Son    (1957)

"His guns could stop anything but a woman's lie!" - basic outlaw father has the chance to help the son he nere knew story line - this should not be confused with the 1954 film of the same name, no is it in any way a sequel to Howard Hughes "The Outlaw". It has the feel of a well staged and scored TV drama of the day - and is well worth a viewing (even if you're not a big fan of westerns)
Director: Lesley Selander
Writers: Clifton Adams (novel), Richard Alan Simmons
Stars:Dane Clark, Ben Cooper, Lori Nelson and (in her last feature film) Ellen Drew
Riders of the Whistling Skull 1937

Best of the Three Mesquiteers' series of Westerns.  Ray (Crash) Corrigan, Bob Livingston and Max Terhune are well complimented by a supporting cast including Iron Eyes Cody and Chief Thunder Cloud.  The plot centers on an archaeological expedition to a lost Indian city of gold.  The city is surrounded by an ominous rock formation that whistles as the wind blows through it.  The film is enhanced by the eerie lighting effects and exciting suspense sequences.
Tombstone Canyon 1935

This film was saved from being just another horse opera by the outstanding performance of Sheldon Lewis as The Phantom, some neat plot twists and fine production values.  This was filmed at Tiffany with a Universal studios' crew and Ken Maynard as star.
Pony Express  1925

Ricardo Cortez and Wallace Beery star in the Kodascope Libraries print.  George Bancroft plays the heavy.
Hellgate       1952

Variation on the Prisoner of Shark Island, this time its Sterling Hayden as the innocent doctor, imprisoned for helping the wrong man back to health.
The General   1927

Keaton's favorite of his many films, and most likely his best.  Newly mastered from a Thunderbird 16mm print with a music track.
Terror Of Tiny Town  1938

Released by Columbia, this boasts of being the only all midget western... thank God.  A year later Jed Buell's midgets were to go under the rainbow at MGM.
Spoilers  1914

Original filmed version of the classic Rex Beach western adventure.  During the great fist fight scene the actors were so 'into' it that one of them landed in the hospital
Young Daniel Boone    1950

Frontier scout Daniel Boone is sent out to locate the only two survivors of General Braddock's men that are believed two have lived through an Indian massacre. One of the survivors, Charlie Bryan, witnessed the capture of his two daughters, Rebecca and Helen, by the Indians. Boone succeeds in locating and rescuing the women. Shorty afterwards, the Boone party is joined by Captain Fraser, who proves to be an intelligence officer in the French forces, and Boone's small group is captured. An Indian attack is diverted and the tables are turned in favor of the British forces. Boone kills Captain Fraser, and looks forward to a happy future in Kentucky with Rebecca
Southerner  1945

Jean Renoir's brilliant portrayal of one man's struggle to start a farm in the south.  Renoir co-wrote this with an uncredited William Faulkner.  Zachary Scott, Betty Field, Beulah Bondi, Percy Kilbride and J. Carrol Naish star.

Sagebrush Trail

The Haunted Ranch  1943

This above average entry into the Monogram 'Range Busters' series stars Glenn Strange (Gunsmoke's bartender and Frankenstein's monster) and David Sharpe.
The Silver Horde  1930

Joel McCrea, in his first he-man role, stars in this action packed adventure film based on the novel by Rex Beach. An early appearence by Jean Arthur and a final role for Blanche Sweet also highlight this feature
The Texas Kid  1944

Johnny Mack Brown and Raymond Hatton star in this Monogram outing.  This is the archetypical B western of the 1940's. While the screen play was written by Jess Bowers it was based on a story by Lynton Brent, who appears in the film as a character named Jess.
Wolves of the Range  1943

Bob Livingston stars in this entry into the PRC Lone Rider series.  Sam Newfield directs.Dorn is after the rancher's land and is trying to stop Banker Brady from helping them. When his man Hammond kills Brady, there is a run on the bank. When Rocky volunteers to ride to the next town for money, he is ambushed by Dorn's men, loses his memory, and is jailed for supposedly stealing the money.
Silent Enemy  1929

The last great Paramount silent film, released with a spoken prologue and musical score.  This was a semi-documentary on the vanishing American Indian and his real enemy in the early 20th century: hunger.
